Taunton Dragons join the Somerset Basketball League

4By Paul YabsleyTags: 16/17, SBL

For the 2016/17 season the SBL welcomes new team the Taunton Dragons. The Dragons were formed by Matt Scott Davies with help from Matt Potter, after the withdrawal of other teams at the end of last season.

Since then, with Matt Scott Davies moving to Dubai, the full running of the team has been taken over by Matt Potter. The team will be made up of a mixture of ex Vikings, Tornados, Revolution and Comets members along with some new players as well.

Unfortunately, after successful seasons in 2015/16, both Vikings and Comets have withdrawn from the league this year. Comets have told the league they hope to return to senior competition in 2017/18 and in the meantime will focus on junior development. However, the loss of the Comets and Vikings from Somerset Basketball has provided an opportunity for the Dragons.

Initially it was thought the new team would be called The Taunton vipers but after consultation among the players and a subsequent vote The Dragons were hatched instead. An appropriate choice given the flag of Somerset and Council coat of arms!

The team will play their home matches at Castle Sports Centre and their primary kit colour will be black. They will be coached and managed by Matt Potter with an assistant to be confirmed. The team is looking for sponsorship to help with costs and anyone interested should contact Matt.

Dragons have been getting ready for the season with regular training over the summer and though they currently have a full roster, are always welcoming to new players who want to join them. If you are interested send them a message through their facebook page facebook.com/tauntondragons.
