Huish Hornets head coach Gary Carter on the upcoming season

Following a solid debut season in which they posted a 10 win 7 loss record and finished just short of playoff position, Huish Hornets will be back in senior men’s competition for 2016/17. We posed a few questions to head coach Gary.

Last year was the first season for the Hornets, were you happy with how it went?

Yes, it was a successful year for us, as the intention was to offer another outlet for our juniors to play and bring seniors around them that could support their development. We never really expected to push for the playoffs but we were one of the in-form teams towards the end and only just missed out.

What does your roster look like for the coming season?

We have most of our senior players returning plus we hope to add a couple more! Our juniors are quite raw but I am confident that they will pick up the pace and develop fast alongside our senior players.

If you are signing new players, what will they bring to your team?

If we sign everyone we hope to, a bit more size and power as well as more experience to pass on to the junior players.

What has the team been doing to prepare for the new season?

We have been practicing and starting to put our systems in place for the start of the season, as well as getting everyone sharper and in shape!

Do you have any goals for the 2016/17 season?

Our goals as always are to improve our junior players and give them the opportunity to develop with and against senior players who have played at a high level. I think if we can play together and get everyone to understand their role each game then I think we will make a strong push for playoff position.

You are having a brand new facility built, when will the Hornets be playing there?

We hope to be in our new facility by the start of January. We are obviously excited by this as we want our facility to be the home of basketball within Somerset, as the Huish Tigers program prepares for the reintroduction of Men’s National League in 2017.
