We are committed to providing a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all players, coaches, officials, and supporters. Our aim is to promote the sport of basketball across Somerset and to create opportunities for involvement in all aspects of the game.
This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for everyone involved with Somerset Basketball. It complements Basketball England’s Code of Ethics and Conduct, which all participants are required to follow.
Somerset Basketball exists to offer players in the region the chance to engage in friendly competition, support individual development, and raise standards of play. It also serves as a bridge for junior players transitioning into senior competition, while offering opportunities for coaches, officials, volunteers, and supporters to contribute and grow.
Participation is open to all, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, ethnic origin, cultural or social background, sexual orientation, religious belief, political affiliation, or any other personal characteristic.
We all share the responsibility of safeguarding players and officials. Coaches, players, and all participants are expected to act with the highest standards of integrity.
We encourage a spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. Aggression, violence, or abuse—whether during or outside of competition—will not be tolerated. Individuals who behave in ways that contradict this Code of Conduct may be subject to disciplinary action.
While we take a realistic approach to the challenges of competition, our priority is the safety and wellbeing of all participants. Any action deemed violent or intended to cause harm will result in immediate intervention by officials, which may include disqualification from the game or future participation.
Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their teams and are expected to work collaboratively with officials to defuse tension during games. Coaches, officials, and players all play a role in fostering fairness and creating a positive, enjoyable atmosphere.
There is no place for violence in basketball. For the future of our organisation, it is essential that this principle is clearly understood and upheld by all. Our community must share a common understanding of acceptable behaviour and work together to maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Abusive or inappropriate comments, gestures, or behaviour directed at officials will not be tolerated. In return, we expect officials to carry out their duties with professionalism and impartiality. Officials’ decisions are final. Players and coaches are encouraged to minimise questioning of calls and, when necessary, to do so respectfully and constructively. Mistakes may occur, but every effort should be made to ensure they do not negatively affect the game.
Coaching staff are responsible for sharing this Code of Conduct with all members of their team or club and for reinforcing its principles. Our goal is to see basketball in Somerset grow and thrive.
We ask everyone to support this Code of Conduct and work together to promote a positive, respectful, and enjoyable environment for basketball in Somerset.
