Report: Huish Tigers win SBL Playoff Final 2022
159The 2021/22 SBL season culminated with Huish Tigers adding Playoff Champions to their League Title accolades, defeating Taunton Tornados 87 – 56 and crowning a successful first season in the SBL.
In front of a packed crowd at Richard Huish College, both teams started strong and were neck and neck until the end of the first quarter when Tigers went on a run of several baskets unanswered to take an 8-point lead. Vincent Masca scored 10 of his game high 23 points in the quarter for Tigers and Sean Holmes added 7 for Tornados.
Huish increased their pressure on defense in the second with a zone press which led to turnovers and baskets on the fast break. They also shot well from outside with Bailey Pattemore and Mark Schroeder knocking down three (of the team’s 8 in total) 3-pointers in the quarter.
Tornados had a better quarter offensively led by Robin Boult scoring 10 of his 16 points. View top scorers and full running scores. Too many costly turnovers from the team however saw them struggle to keep pace and Tigers had stretched the lead to 17 by the end of the first half.
The second half started with both teams unable to find a rhythm on offense, each only managing 12 points in the third quarter and neither team able to extend or reduce the lead. In the final quarter Tigers once again stepped up their defense and showed their form with strong rebounding and drives to the basket.
Tornados had no answer for Tigers size and intensity in the 4th but battled hard to the end and showed glimpses of good poise on offense.
Final score: Huish Tigers 87 – 56 Taunton Tornados. Well done to both teams for reaching the final and congratulations to Huish Tigers on becoming Champions!
After no basketball in 20/21 the 21/22 season has been a very successful return for Somerset Basketball. A big thank you to the committee and other volunteers who make the league happen and to all the teams and players for taking part and helping everything go smoothly.
