Huish Taunton Tigers got their first win of the season on Sunday (14/10/18) when they travelled to Wales to play NBL D4 SW newcomers Cardiff Met Archers II.

Tigers got a good start to the match with forward Mark Schroeder scoring their first 6 points. Guard Joe Andrews scored the next 6 with a made 3-pointer followed by 3 from the free-throw line after being fouled. Back to back 3-pointers from B. Smallwood kept Archers close early but they quickly found themselves in foul trouble. Tigers took full advantage making all of their free-throws in the quarter, 12 in total.

Heading into the second quarter Tigers held a 7-point lead (25 — 17) which was quickly pushed to 10 following made 3-pointers from Casey Williams and Alex Potter. Archers were made to work hard for their points as Tigers held them to just 13 in the period, pushing their lead to 30 – 49 at half time.

Cardiff started the second half positively, enjoying their best quarter in the third. They were able to reduce the deficit to 11 points thanks to good shooting from J. Kinder who scored four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points in the quarter. Archers also increased their defensive pressure, causing Tigers to turn the ball over.

One highlight for Tigers though was guard Alex Potter, who scored 3 consecutive 3-pointers, keeping their momentum going. Potter finished with a game-high 26 points including 7 made threes! Taunton lost the quarter 29 – 21 but still held a 10-point lead heading into fourth.

Tigers regrouped in the final quarter, doing a better job of handling the defensive pressure from Archers whilst making better decisions on offense. Archers were unable to continue their excellent shooting from the third and Tigers were clinical in closing out the game. Final score Archers 76 – 91 Tigers.

In the only other NBL Division 4 South West fixture this weekend, Dorset Storm won away from home against Gloucester Saxons 63 – 83. Tigers have a break next weekend but on Saturday 27th October they play their first home game of the season when they host Oxford Steelers at Richard Huish College, tip-off 19:00.
