League competition 2017/18
36Somerset Basketball has received entries from six teams for the upcoming season which means the league will once again run for the 2017/18 season. Format and start date for the league are still to be confirmed.
To date we have received six firm entries from teams who want to participate. In no particular order these are, Bridgwater Baltics, Bridgwater Bucs, Team BC Bucs, Taunton Dragons, Taunton Tornados and Culm Valley Comets. We are happy to say this means that the league will once again go ahead in 2017/18!
Sadly, Huish Hornets have withdrawn from the league due to other commitments for players and coaches. We were also hoping Wells Warriors might be able to raise a team again this year but that has not been possible.
We have been thinking about formats for the league and how best to serve the teams involved. With 6 teams again this year we wondered if there was scope for changing the format so teams play each other 3 times instead of twice. No decision has currently been made on this!
Maybe there are other suggestions for format? We do have to bear in mind the availability of referees and you will not be surprised to note that five of the six teams play on a Friday night! With limited officials available, this makes running the league challenging. I would be very interested to hear from any team considering a change in playing night.
I am also exploring the possibility of a cup competition, which could involve two other sides to enable this to run smoothly. When I have more information about this we will let you know. I’d be interested to know your thoughts on any of the above and feedback would be appreciated. If you have questions please send me an email.
We will post further updates when we know the format for the coming season. There is no start date set at this point but it will likely be early October. Costings for each club will be calculated when we know what the format will be and we will advise on this as soon as we know.
