Somerset Basketball Code of Conduct

20Tags: Policy, SBL

We are committed to creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience for all players, coaches, officials and supporters. We aim to promote the sport of Basketball in Somerset and provide opportunities for involvement in all aspects of the game.

This code of conduct outlines the expectations we have for every person involved with Somerset Basketball. It is an extension of Basketball England’s Code of Ethics and Conduct of which all participants must adhere.

Somerset Basketball exists as a way for players in the Somerset area to participate in friendly competition whilst helping to develop individuals and to raise standards of play. It is a bridge for junior players to transition into senior competition. By extension, it also offers opportunity for coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters.

It is open to all regardless of age, disability, gender, race, ethnic origin, cultural or social background, sexual orientation, religious belief, political affiliation or any other personal characteristic/feature.

It is our duty to take appropriate steps to safeguard players and officials. We share this responsibility with coaches and players alike. All individuals have a responsibility to act according to the highest standards of integrity.

We encourage players to compete with a sporting and fair play approach. We will not accept or tolerate, aggression, violence or abuse in any form, during or outside of competition. We will not accept players, coaches or any individual who conducts themselves in ways not aligned with this code of conduct.

We seek a realistic approach but it is our duty to ensure the safety of all individuals. Any action deemed violent or intended to cause harm will face immediate action by officials, appropriate to the situation. If necessary, disqualifying players from games and future participation.

Coaches will be held responsible for their team’s actions and should work together with officials to defuse tension should it arise during games. Coaches, officials and players are all responsible for promoting fairness and a fun, enjoyable atmosphere for all.

There is no place for violence in Basketball. It is important for the future of our organisation that this is clear to all involved. Our community must adopt a shared understanding of what is acceptable and work together to ensure we provide an environment that is safe for everyone.

We will not tolerate any comments, gestures or behaviour directed at officials that is deemed abusive or inappropriate. In return we expect officials to perform their duties completely and with the utmost professionalism at all times. Officials’ decisions during games are final. We encourage players and coaches to minimise the questioning of calls and when doing so to be polite and friendly at all times. Players, coaches and officials must accept that mistakes will happen but every effort should be taken to ensure they do not negatively impact the game.

Coaching staff are responsible for sharing this code of conduct with all members of their team or club and to reinforce the principles in it. Our intention is to see basketball grow and thrive, not to let it deteriorate.

We ask for everyone’s help in supporting this code of conduction and to work together to promote a positive and enjoyable environment for Basketball in Somerset.
