League action following abandoned Baltics vs Hornets fixture

On Friday 4 November at Bridgwater College Academy a league fixture between Bridgwater Baltics and Huish Hornets was abandoned mid-way through the third quarter.

The league has received reports from both coaches and both officials involved and the following is the result of careful consideration of those reports. The committee takes this situation very seriously and as a result we want to be very clear about what is and isn’t acceptable for those involved with Somerset Basketball.

The result of this fixture will be that Huish Hornets forfeit the game. There is a dispute between the teams about what led to the game being abandoned but on reviewing the reports the committee has decided that no further action will be taken against either team. It is our view that players and coaches from both teams, as well as officials, share the blame for allowing it to reach that point.

It should be deeply concerning to all that a team felt they could not continue a game out of fear of serious injury. This should never happen and is unprecedented in the leagues history. It is clear from the reports that the game became out of control with players on both sides resorting to behaviour that could jeopardise safety.

Somerset Basketball’s aim is to provide opportunities for friendly competition as well as development for all regardless of age or ability. With this in mind and as a result of this situation we have created a Code of Conduct to promote fair play and a sporting approach. It should be shared with all team/club members.

We understand that physicality is part of Basketball but we are asking for all to be realistic. We must take a safety conscious approach to avoid unnecessary injury or harm to players.

We ask that coaches take responsibility for their team’s actions and work with referees to defuse tension should it arise. It is the responsibility of everyone to ensure safe and enjoyable games. It is unacceptable for anyone to direct abusive comments or gestures at officials. Communication between players/coaches and officials should be friendly and polite at all times.

Everyone involved is a part of the Somerset Basketball community and we must work together to create a safe and fun environment where everyone is treated with respect and courtesy. We ask all clubs and officials to review the Code of Conduct and to adopt the principles it outlines going forward.
