Report: Exeter & District Inter-Division Parsloe Play-off Final
263Bucs entered the final hoping to win the EDBA Inter Division Play-off Final for the second consecutive season. Bayside Sharks, were the opposition hoping to finish their season with some silverware, after winning the EDBA Division 2 title.

Bayside Sharks, of Torquay finished this year’s league campaign with an impressive 15 wins and only 3 losses.
Bucs started the game with their most experienced starting five; Kuznecovs, Nurse, Vickery, Rogers & Botelho in the hope it would help the team settle into the occasion and as expected, there wasn’t much between the two teams in the opening exchanges, but Sharks did manage to force themselves ahead into a 19-9 lead with sharp ball movement and clinical finishing around the basket. Bucs introduced Rowswell and Down who helped reduce the deficit to 4 points with Sharks ending the first quarter leading 22-18.
Vickery started the second quarter with back-to-back three pointers to tie the game up at 24 apiece. Sharks also displayed some fine perimeter shooting themselves, with three 3 points contributing to their quarter total of 13 to carry a slender 35-32 lead into the half time break.
The second half began in cagey fashion with both teams only able to score two baskets each in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Hodgkinson of Sharks soon took the game by the scruff of the neck to score 12 points in the final three minutes of the quarter to increase Sharks’ lead to 51-44. With Bucs struggling to find a consistent fluency on offense, it looked like the game was going to slip away especially as Sharks held an 8 point lead with 7 minutes remaining of the game.
A brief stoppage in play due to an injury allowed Bucs to regroup and one last rallying call was issued from the bench to step up the defensive effort to get back into the game. The response that was required was the response that was received as Bucs were able to go on a 10-2 run to level the game at 56-56 with only 2 minutes left.
After trailing to Sharks for the entire game, could Bucs complete the comeback? Up stepped Jan Cruda to score two crucial baskets either side of 2 free throws from Sharks dangerman, Hodgkinson, to take a 60-58 lead into the final minute of the game.
Bucs were able to see the final minute out maintaining possession of the ball for most of the final minute to complete the comeback and clinch the victory. Bucs scoring was lead by Thiago Botelho,19, Liam Vickery, 16, and Igors Kuznecovs,7.
Liam Vickery was deservedly voted the finals MVP by the table officials. Bucs attention swiftly turns back to the Somerset Basketball League (SBL) where they will hope to complete the season retaining the SBL Playoff Championship throughout April.
