Huish Taunton Tigers' run in the National Shield competition came to an end on Sunday, following a disappointing loss at home to Solent Kestrels II.

At the end of the first quarter Tigers found themselves trailing 14 – 20 and still to find a rhythm on offense. Kestrels began the game playing strong defense and were able to match Tigers size inside. They also shot well in the period, hitting several long-range shots with defenders rushing out.

The second quarter saw a huge swing in favour of Taunton who were able to get their own outside shooting going, led by guard Igors Kuznecovs who made two 3-pointers in the period. They also stepped up their defense, limiting Solent to just 13 points. With their offense flowing, the game seemed simple for Tigers and they went into half time leading 41 – 33.

Their lead however, would be short-lived. In the third, Solent came storming back behind guard Teesdale who scored 4 consecutive 3-pointers early in the quarter. To make matters worse, Tigers could not find their own basket, scoring just 9 points in the quarter. With things not going their way on offense mistakes and turnovers started to creep in.

It was turning point for the game as Taunton watched their lead evaporate and turn into a deficit heading into the fourth quarter. Down five and with momentum against them Tigers fought hard to regain the lead. Kestrels showed good composure though and with some help from the officials, were able to get to the free-throw line again and again, effectively closing out the game despite the improved effort from Taunton.

Final score Huish Taunton Tigers 71 – 78 Solent Kestrels II.

Coach Anderson remained positive after the game,

The team should be proud of reaching the third round of the Shield and only narrowly losing to a well drilled division 3 side. We played very well in the second quarter but were let down by our performance in the first and especially third. We’re still undefeated in league competition and I’m sure the players will be keen put this loss behind them in our next match.

Tigers have another home match this Saturday (18/11/17) against Southampton Sharks at Richard Huish College. Tip-off 18:00.
