Huish Taunton Tigers played their second league fixture of the season when they hosted Oxford City Hoops at Richard Huish College on 7th Ocotber. Tigers have yet to make a good start to a match this season and this one was no different.

Oxford started the game in an extended zone defense and were able to pick off Taunton passes with ease. Tigers struggled to execute offensively throughout the quarter, making simple mistakes, which led to turnovers. Good shooting from Oxford meant the quarter finished with Tigers trailing 12 – 19.

In the second quarter Tigers were able to reduce the number of turn-overs they were making and begin to make better decisions. Their defense also saw a marked improvement and despite Oxford point guard Jamie Furlong scoring 8 in the quarter, Tigers were able to limit them to 12 points.

Offensively Taunton recognised their advantage inside and started to go to work close to the basket. Robin Boult was especially effective, making strong moves around the hoop and adding 8 points to his game total of 20. The half ended with Taunton in the lead 36 – 32.

In the third quarter Tigers started very well, continuing to get easy looks inside and really take control of the game. Joel Harrison played well, adding 8 points from fast breaks and drives to the basket. Mark Schroeder who was consistent throughout the game contributed 7 points, adding to his team-high 22 points total.

Oxford guard Furlong continued to frustrate the Tiger’s defense, adding another 10 points to his game-high total of 33 which included 5 three pointers. The quarter finished 65 – 51 in favour of Taunton.

In the final period Oxford switched to a man-to-man defense and increased their pressure in an attempt to get back in the game. The strategy was half successful with the aggressive defense leading to more Tigers turn-overs. However, Coach Anderson called a timeout to regroup and Taunton were able to finish the game looking after the ball, forcing Oxford to foul, sending them on the free throw line.

Final score Huish Taunton Tigers 91 – 80 Oxford City Hoops. Coach Anderson said,

I think the team is starting to realise where our strengths lie and overall I’m pleased with our performance, despite another slow start. Oxford City Hoops are a talented young side and competed hard throughout. We had great support from everyone who came to watch and I hope we can be sharper for them at our next home game.

On 15th October Tigers travel to Rhonnda to face RCT Gladiators in their next league fixture. The following week will see them return home for a second round National Shield match against Bristol Academy Flyers II on Sunday 22nd, tip-off 16:00.
