Huish Taunton Tigers were knocked out of the National Shield on Saturday (22nd September) by Bristol Hurricanes, losing away from home 97 – 83.

Bristol Hurricanes, newcomers to NBL Division 4 South West, played a tough and physical game of basketball, shooting very well and scoring a total of 15 3-pointers. Tigers trailed by 9 at the end of the first quarter but were able to settle in the second and reduce the deficit to just 4.

Taunton were unable to reclaim the lead however and Bristol enjoyed another strong period of play including a string of 5 consecutive 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth.

Tigers continued to fight hard till the end, reducing the lead to 14 but Hurricanes closed out the game well. Final score Bristol Hurricanes 97 – 83 Huish Taunton Tigers. Following the loss Tigers Coach Richard Anderson said,

Hurricanes played very well today and deserve to advance to the next round of the Shield. There is more for us to improve on and I hope our players learn from today’s game. In particular, we made too many mistakes and our defensive rebounding let us down. However I did see some positives today. We had spells of good play but we need to be able to maintain them for longer.

Next week Tigers travel to Surrey for their first league match of the season and the following week they play away against Cardiff Met Archers II. Their first home fixture will be on Saturday 20th October when they host Gloucester Saxons at Richard Huish College, 19:00. Their full fixture list can be seen here.
