Huish Tigers win Dynamic National Schools 2023 U19 final!

Huish Tigers became U19 Champions of National Schools Competition when they defeated Bedford Academy Thursday 30th March 2023 at the National Basketball Performance Center in Manchester.

Richard Huish College won a frenetic Under-19 Men's Final against Bedford Academy behind a huge effort from Al Ross. The Huish captain claimed MVP honours with 27 points 12 rebounds and five assists to inspire his team to an 85 - 77 victory.

He was supported by double-figure scoring contributions from Sean Raithby (15pts, 13rbs), Oscar Gillard (13pts, 11rbs) and Harry Jackson (11).

Elleon Alonso carried the fight to Huish for Bedford with 18 points, while Dylan Lambert had 13 points and nine rebounds and Senen Ametume chipped in 12 with nine rebounds.

Huish had broken into a 19-12 lead after a quarter and were 37-33 up at the half. A 26-16 third quarter gave the victors enough breathing room to hold off their rivals.

The National Schools Competition is an English league with age groups from Under 12 all the way up to Under 19 for both girls and boys. It gives every age group in secondary school the chance to compete outside of their normal PE classes. Finals are usually held in March and May where the final teams battle it out to be crowned the Champions!

The team were coached by Academy Head Coach Gary Carter and Assistant Coach Igors Kuznecovs. Following the victory Carter said:

I am so proud of what the players have achieved. This is a culmination of the progress we have been making over the last few years. We are immensely proud of the programme we have been building and it’s fantastic to see our vision come to fruition.

Tigers progressed to the finals after defeating John Madejski Academy Reading, Queen Mary’s College Basingstoke, Coombe Wood School South Croydon and Millfield School Somerset in the earlier rounds of the National Schools Competition.

In addition to competing in the SBL the Huish Tigers academy program have also competed in National League U18 Western Premier division this season. Facing stiff competition from some of the top teams in the country they gained valuable experience and finished 9th overall.
