NBL Report: RCT Gladiators vs Taunton Tigers
44Taunton Tigers Men travelled to Rhonnda, Wales on Sunday for their away league fixture against RCT Gladiators. Tigers managed to prevail in an exciting overtime finish following a shot for the win on the buzzer, which narrowly missed.
Taunton got their first good start of the season with their outside shooting firing early. Led by Joe Andrews who poured in 12 points they finished with 28 in the quarter against Rhonnda’s 22.
Gladiators played a physical style of defence throughout the game, frustrating Tigers and at times causing them to lose composure. Offensively they showed what they were capable of, knocking down shots from outside and moving the ball well. Tigers were unable to establish themselves close to the basket and Rhonnda took the second quarter 20 – 16 leaving Taunton with a narrow 2-point lead heading into half time.
The home side kept the momentum going into the third quarter which saw them push Tigers into foul trouble and go to the free throw line 6 times. They were also helped by Phil Warren who scored 8 points in the quarter from mid-range jump shots and quick moves around the basket. At the end of the third Tigers found themselves trailing 64 – 62.
The fourth quarter was the most physical of the games with both teams battling hard for the win. By this stage Rhonnda’s aggressive play had caught up with them with two players fouled out and their coach ejected after receiving two technical fouls for arguing with officials. Tigers had foul trouble of their own with two players fouled out also and in team fouls for most of the quarter.
With just a couple of minutes left to play and with the game in the balance Gladiators held a 5-point lead. Despite numerous attempts Tigers could not get any close-range shots to go down. With time running out Taunton were forced to chase the game with pressure defense, which led to crucial turnovers and defensive stops. Joe Andrews then made back-to-back baskets on consecutive offenses with a three pointer from the right wing followed by a pull-up mid-range jump shot to tie the game at 81 a piece and force overtime!
In overtime Tigers had the advantage, having come from behind to tie the game. They were able to draw the Rhonnda defence out with good shooting, leaving the inside open and allowing them to finally get some easy baskets inside. They took an early lead and were able to hold on to take the win 91 – 85. After the game Coach Anderson said,
That was a very tough game for us but I’m pleased our players were able to come through when it counted. We started and finished well but failed to execute for large parts of the game, making it difficult for ourselves. I’m glad to come home with the win though, from an away fixture against a team who narrowly missed out on winning the league last season.
Top scorers for Tigers were Joe Andrews 26, Igors Kuzņecovs 15 and Jack Roberts 14.
Next Sunday (22/10/17) Tigers host Bristol Flyers II in the second round of the National Shield knockout competition. Tip-off 16:00 at Richard Huish College.
