New sports venue opens at Richard Huish College

A new sports hall has opened at Richard Huish College on its South Road campus in Taunton. The brand new facility will be the new home venue for Somerset Basketball’s Huish Hornets.

Work on the Sycamore Sports Hall, as it will be known, started in early 2016 and was officially opened on Wednesday 4th January 2017. The new venue boasts a multi-sports arena, spacious viewing gallery, gym, dedicated classrooms and state-of-the-art camera technology for performance analysis.

Huish has a long-standing reputation of excellence in sport and many students compete at a National level in Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Squash, Cross Country, Trampolining, Swimming, Table Tennis and Badminton. Huish Tigers Basketball team train and play at the College and will also hugely benefit from the new facilities.

The first Somerset Basketball League fixture will take place there on Thursday 12 January at 19:45 when Huish Hornets host Bridgwater Bucs. Hornets head coach Gary Carter, welcomed anyone interested in the new facility to come and have a look around.

Basketball Camp

Following the opening of the new centre, Huish Tigers will be running a 3 day Basketball Camp during February half term, 13th – 15th, 10am – 3pm. Players will develop their all round fundamental skills in dribbling, passing and shooting and get a chance to challenge themselves and compete in camp games. Find out more and book.

Basketball Level 1 Coaching Course

There are still places available for those interested in a Level 1 Coaching qualification course, also being held at the new venue on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th February. This is your basic level if you’re starting out in the world of basketball coaching. It is a great course for beginner coaches, parents or anyone interested in knowing more about the basics of coaching and basketball. Find out more and book.
